Wow!

Woke up Thursday morning to howling wind and moaning, shivering Borkita dog. Poor Casey. He's a neurotic mess.

The power went out by about 9AM, and we watched anxiously as the wind picked up. Some buildings in our complex lost roof chunks and siding, but ours held up well. Our building is oriented with the short, windowless side dead-on to the northeast, so the wind just swirled around us. Our southeast balcony was full of bedraggled mourning doves.

Some small trees went down, and our big pines lost some branches. We watched it rain sideways, up, backwards, you name it.

By midnight, the worst had passed. We listened to TV reports on our little TV-band radio, and vowed to get a battery-operated TV soon. I sewed a new linen hood, entirely by hand, by candlelight. Felt so smugly medieval it hurt.

Casey, who formerly followed me everywhere (I'm his trained Pet Woman), switched allegiances during the storm. The Samurai is The Man. Where he goes, Casey follows. During the worst of the storm, Casey would only go out if the Samurai was with him. Poor doggie is just now recovering his equilibrium.

We went to Arn and Rosine's last night, just to get out and chat with other humans. Lots of beautiful trees are down all over, including the lovely Bradford pears in front of my school. Driving home before the 9 PM curfew was eerie, as we passed through large areas still without power. Va. Beach is usually garishly lit at night. It was strange to see no lights at all, not even from houses.

The moon was lovely, though, and the night peaceful.

Today, we're sweeping up leaf slaw--green leaves shredded by wind, liberally coating everything. As they dry, they smell yummy, but track in on shoe soles, dog paws, everything. I'm sure we'll be shoveling leaf slaw for weeks.

Off to do more sewing! I want to look very cool for History Alive!
