No House
2004-08-30 9:44 p.m.

Well, we didn't get the house. It was nice, but the Samurai has helpfully pointed out that it had little bitty bathrooms. We were grossly outbid by a guy who offered ten grand over the appraised value. I was astonished, but glad we didn't have that kind of money to be foolish with. This house wasn't worth the moolah.

We'll keep looking. Our agent is great (Thanks again, Sue! And she says hi to you guys!) and she thinks she can find us what we want. The more time we take, the more cash we'll have, so we're in no rush.

School today wiped me out. Meeeetings, all meetings. Fortunately, we have reacquired one of the best special ed teachers to draw breath, after a brief departure on his part, and he cut right to the chase in our endless SOL score analysis session. As we were all lamenting our school's failure to demonstrate "adequate yearly progress" (an NCLB term) in one puny category--reading SOL scores in our disabled population--Jim translated the stats into real numbers. He pointed out that 25 of our kids failed the SOL by 12 points, but that if ten of them had passed, we'd be golden. We're going to focus our efforts on our inclusion students, who are academically the strongest, and see what we can do.

Of course, the inclusion kids are all in MY class this year. My SpEd partner teacher is wonderful, though, and we're determined to give it our all. The kids we're talking about have above-average IQ, but lack self-esteem, being accustomed to failure. We'll make sure they know they can succeed at something meaningful before we send them off to high school.

Gotta move my feet; the remnants of Gaston are blowing through, so I have a 100 lb. Borkita footwarmer tonight. My poor soles are all sweaty.
